Primary Function The Director of Programming is responsible for developing and executing a strategy that creates innovative, dynamic, and diverse programming and experiences for the Shubert Theatre. The Director of Programming works collaboratively on deeply layered and unique projects that positions the Shubert as a leading arts presenter within the community. Duties and Responsibilities Develops and executes a creative programming strategy that complements existing arts programming in the marketplace and leverages gaps in audience experience. Produces programs with the potential for live presentation as well as distribution across the full range of broadcast and digital platforms. Works with the Executive Director to develop annual and long-term programming goals that address the Shubert’s mission and institutional objectives, and clearly defines the Shubert’s place in the cultural landscape locally, nationally, and globally. Establishes and manages a Programming budget that ensures strong fiscal stewardship and financial sustainability, including expenditure and earned revenue goals. Produces final project reports and program evaluations. Partners with finance team on event reconciliation. Develops new subscription series beyond Broadway. Manages bookings, from negotiation to settlement, for all Shubert presented performances, including overseeing contracting process. Is creative and entrepreneurial in pursuit of earned income opportunities. Maintains key industry relationships regionally and nationally in the touring arts space. Oversees partnerships with a broad range of programmatic collaborators and curators. Negotiates artist and partner relationships and contractual agreements. Identifies performance barriers for New Haven-based arts organizations and artists; develops programming that highlights local artists, addresses challenges, and ensures local artists feel welcome and aware of the booking process. Manages programming research, timelines and schedules. · Manages the master venue calendar and maintains effective communication across departments regarding program plans and artist information, ensuring timely problem solving when necessary. Works with marketing and communications team on promotion and sales of events. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills. Excellent ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple competing assignments and responsibilities and communicate effectively regarding progress to deliverables. Knowledge of marketing strategies and the ability to consider such as a standard part of programming. Strong marketing knowledge of the performing arts and entertainment industry. Ability to implement strategy and deliver results. A high degree of professionalism, confidence and flexibility that allows the incumbent to work collaboratively and effectively build working relationships with clients and colleagues of diverse backgrounds. Understanding of the nonprofit business model relating to producing, presenting and touring. Values accuracy with a keen eye for details. Is committed to excellence and live performance. Credentials and Experience Bachelor’s degree with a focus on an artistic discipline, arts administration or other relevant educational background is required; Master’s degree preferred. 8-10 years’ experience producing and/or presenting both small and large-scale artistic work. Successful experience in performing arts presenting, including agency relationships, contract development and negotiations, deal structures, performance marketing, facility rentals, budget management, and a working knowledge of technical requirements.
