Haven Arts Park (HAP) will award three artists and one designer, in a first-of-its kind commissioning grant for the organization. Read more about Haven Arts Park's goal and mission here. Three artists will be awarded to create one sculpture maquette artwork each that openly interprets one of the three value propositions of Haven Arts Park. This means one artist per theme. The themes are as follows: (1) Art as Healing: From early-stage temporary art installations we’ve programmed, our main value proposition has always been to make space with art and encourage reflection centered around healing and being in community. This value proposition is centered around the way art is a tool for programming and community engagement. (2) COVID-19 Memorial: Haven Arts Park’s debut initiative of Diary Disks was driven by the concept of creating art installations and providing a space for active reflection on the community's pandemic experience. The initiative focused on conversations about the importance of having spaces to reflect on these experiences in community, in public space. This value is one of memorializing our experiences collectively. (3) Greener Experience: Spatial analyses of New Haven tell us that access to urban tree coverage is the least in predominantly Black and Brown neighborhoods, which are also the most disproportionately affected by COVID-19. The desire for more urban green spaces has been emphasized since the beginning of the project. Fusing this with art is what we believe exemplifies a true “greener experience” that encourages reflection and healing. One designer will be awarded to create a concept drawing of Haven Arts Park’s design layout in the Little Bayview site. This will be the first preliminary site drawing imagining the park, and the designer will work with guidance from past research initiatives and Community Advisory Board meeting conversations. Grant amounts are as follows: 3 Artists: $3,650 per artist 1 Designer: $2,550
