Description
The Nu Haven Kapelye is a volunteer, community-based, multi-generational ensemble dedicated to preserving and reinvigorating klezmer music (an Eastern European musical tradition) and passing it on to the next generation. The Nu Haven Kapelye was formed in 1998 when a small group of local musicians came together to create a concert of Jewish music for the greater New Haven community on December 25. Over the last 15 years the group has become a year-round klezmer big band, and, with some performances including more than 30 musicians, lays claim to the title of “Largest Klezmer Group in Southern New England”. Its members include professional musicians, students, and many amateur community members who love to make music. The band regularly has up to 20 performances a year, playing at concerts, summer festivals, etc. The group recorded and released their first CD, "What’s Nu?", in 2016, and in 2019 the Nu Haven Kapelye officially received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. During the pandemic, their quarantine videos included “Mazel”, which was accepted to six film festivals and won “Best Music Video” at the 2021 LA Sun Film Fest. The Kapelye released their second album, "Nu Haven Style", in 2023.
