Description

Texas Photographic Society is a non-profit organization that celebrates the photographic arts, inspires creative development and provides opportunities to engage with an international photography community. Our Vision Founded in 1984, TPS supports its members and the community at large by offering exhibitions, publications, workshops and mentorship programs. Members share a passion for creating, appreciating and understanding all forms of photo-based media, providing a platform for artistic expression, dialogue and innovation in the photographic arts. Our History Texas Photographic Society evolved out of an Austin based photo co-op, which was formed in the late 1970s by a small group of photographers who banded together for cooperative film purchasing purposes. In 1982, the group formalized into the Austin Photographic Cooperative (APC) led by President Roy Flukinger. They reorganized in 1984 and incorporated under the name of Texas Photographic Society when Roy Flukinger, Rick Williams and Ave Bonar instituted the Articles of Incorporation, developed supporting bylaws, and attained “not-for-profit” status. Within two years, TPS boasted over 100 members. During this period, the following persons served as President: Danny Schweers (February 1984-85); Robert Labry (December 1985-86); Julie Newton (November 1986-87); David Stence (November 1987-88); Rick Williams (December 1988-91); George Bristol (December 1991-92) and Rick Williams also served as Executive Director (December 1991-92). Contact Sheet, the society’s longstanding newsletter, was born in 1983—during its first incarnation with APC. It was edited by Robert Haslanger and published by James Voight at the time. Between 1987 and 1991, TPS established two annual juried exhibitions, now known as the Members’ Only Show and The International Competition, which remain the society’s flagship shows. In 1993, D. Clarke Evans was elected President, a position he held through 2013. A long-time board member and TPS advocate, Clarke played a pivotal role in the group’s early history and directed TPS into the next frontier. Under Clarke's visionary leadership, TPS became a model non-profit organization, garnering the society "State Wide Service Provider" status from the Texas Commission on the Arts. During Clarke’s tenure, TPS enjoyed record high membership rolls, expanded its international presence and initiated many new significant programs. Over the years, he organized exhibitions across the United States and abroad in addition to educational programs, fellowships, workshops and lectures. After two decades of exemplary contributions to TPS, Clarke retired as President of the Board and Director of TPS and was proudly acknowledged with a reception in his honor during April 2014. Clarke, serving as President Emeritus, graciously supported TPS as it forged ahead under the direction of Amy Holmes George, former TPS Vice President. After contributing to the TPS board for eight years, Amy led the organization for five years, stepping down as Executive Director in October 2018. Subsequently Sarah Sudhoff became the Executive Director through 2019, Susan Edgley led TPS as Executive Director in 2020, and Ann T. Shaw joined the team as ED in 2021. The current Executive Director is Chris Ireland, beginning in the summer of 2025. Today, TPS continues to flourish. The society is delighted to be celebrating 40 years of providing programs and services for photographers and their audiences across the country. TPS is backed by a hard-working Board of Directors as well as a dynamic President’s Council and Advisory Council—together 35 strong—which include professional artists, educators, authors, curators, collectors and industry leaders in the field of photography. And while "Texas" is in the name, TPS sustains an active international following with members from 5 countries and 37 states.

Festival Artist Incubator Initiative

Fort Worth’s Art Worth Festival is celebrating its fourth year with the introduction of a Festival Artist Incubator Initiative: a one-year internship offering guidance to artists interested in the opportunities of marketing their work at national festivals. The goal of Art Worth’s internship program is to give the next generation of Festival Artists the foundation they need to begin their art show careers. Consideration for these Internships will be limited to Texas artists, over 18, whose work shows real potential and promise. Prospective Interns will be recruited from among area university art programs, but college experience is not a requirement; all sufficiently talented artists in Texas with a desire to learn about the opportunities presented to market and sell their work at Art Festivals are invited to apply. This program is based on a collaboration with other major U.S. art festivals, and will be administered onsite at this year’s Art Worth Festival by Camille Marchese, the director of Miami’s Coconut Grove Arts Festival. The one-year internship is designed to help artists learn about gaining access to the Art Fair Industry, as well as, pricing and displaying work, copyright laws, and selling one’s work through this potentially lucrative channel. The Art Worth Festival's Artist Incubator Internship will provide opportunities for Texas artists to up their game and embark upon a rewarding career, encompassing art fairs in their marketing mix. Those applicants selected for the program will apprentice with Professional Artists at this year’s Art Worth Festival, October 24 to 26, on the lawn of The Shops at Clearfork, in Fort Worth, Texas. During the festival, each Intern will spend time with professional mentors to learn the business first-hand, gaining insights to all aspects of the festival business model. This year-long program will encompass interns’ participation in two of the Art Worth Festival’s annual presentations in Fort Worth, Texas. The first year is focused upon Education and Internship. At the next year’s festival, participants will be given the chance to display and sell their work. Other highlights of the second year’s show experience include personal consultations on Financial Planning and the Application Process. The second show interns will also be eligible for our Incubator Jury Award, a cash prize for the strongest body of work among that year’s class of Festival Artist Incubator Interns. The Art Worth Festival’s Incubator Internship is intended to be a robust mentoring program designed to help create the next generation of Art Festival Professionals. Our goal is to give this next generation of Artists the foundation they need to begin their art show careers. Our program is designed to train artists to gain entry to, and sell their work at, the top art fairs in the nation. Applicants selected will also participate in activities prior to this year’s festival (evening of October 22 and all day October 23, as well as all day during the run of the festival, October 24, 25 & 26), as well as a series of learning experiences during the coming year, and be given the opportunity to display their work at next year’s Art Worth Festival, at Clearfork, in October 2026. Applications are open to any resident of Texas, 18 or older, whose work is deemed by our jurors as promising and professional, and has not participated in a major juried art festival. College training is not required. If not a local resident, the applicant must be willing to travel to Fort Worth and provide their own housing during the festival from the evening of October 22 through October 26, 2025. The application process is free and can be accessed through a special google doc, and on our website’s application page. The application deadline is September 30, 2025. A jury comprised of art show professionals will determine which applicants will receive invitations. No more than six interns will be selected each year. Consideration will be given to artists working in all fine-art and fine-craft media, and the Art Worth Festival particularly encourages artists involved in 3D-media, such as glass, metal, wood, clay and fiber to apply. The 4th annual Art Worth Festival will take place, October 24, 25 & 26, on the front lawn of The Shops at Clearfork, in Fort Worth, Texas. The Art Worth Festival is presented by the non-profit ArtWorks Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping artists grow, in the scope of their business as well as the excellence of their work.
